<p>Mais la conséquence la plus importante de la peste fut l’intensification de la crise du travail générée par le conflit de classe, car la décimation de la force de travail rendait le travail extrêmement rare, augmenta son coût de façon drastique, et renforça la détermination des gens à briser les chaînes du régime féodal.</p>
<p>Comme le souligne Christopher Dyer, la raréfaction de main-d’œuvre provoquée par l’épidémie fit bouger les rapports de pouvoir à l’avantage des classes inférieures. Quand la terre était rare, les paysans pouvaient être contrôlés par la menace de l’expulsion. Mais après que la population eut été décimée et la terre fut devenue abondante, les menaces des seigneurs cessèrent d’avoir un effet sérieux, les paysans pouvant maintenant se déplacer librement et trouver de nouvelles terres à cultiver.</p>
