Compte-tenu des objectifs fixés, Dapper Drake serait en retard de non pas six semaines... mais six mois !
Dans un mail interne, Mark Shuttleworth (créateur d'Ubuntu) annonce un remaniement sérieux du calendrier de sortie d'Ubuntu :
Due to important changes in the release process, the delay of six weeks recently confirmed could be extended to a six months one.
As everyone knows, Dapper Drake is the first release of Ubuntu that especially targets professional deployment and usage. A very large amount of work has been done and Dapper is doubtless our smartest product. Considering the amount of work left, one has now two main ways to go on:
- let Dapper fly on June the first and strive for heavy update processes during the summer;
- release more Flight/Pre-release Dapper and reach Dapper+1 release point.
We, the Canonical fellows and contributors, decided to go the second path. A classical user release will be available on June, but the main Dapper release will be on October-so Edgy will follow in 2007. We hope-and believe!- this move will not be interpreted as an overdue in the normal Release process of Ubuntu: many improvements are on the road and you will be able to try and use them, except it will be under Breezy, not Dapper. The key point here is the first part of Ubuntu's history must end without recklessness of any kind, particularly regarding the user experience: you wouldn't want a half-done Dapper, would you?

L'emphase est de mon fait : une version sortira en fait en Juin, mais elle ne sera pas estampillée Dapper, ni destinée aux entreprises. La « vraie » Dapper est désormais prévue pour Octobre, ce qui décale les versions ultérieures de six mois. Ainsi, Edgy Elephant se voit reportée à 2007, et sortira donc... après Windows Vista !
Gageons que ce nouveau délai, important et assurément motivé par de bonnes raisons, permettra à Dapper Drake d'être un vrai challenger dans le petit monde des systèmes d'exploitations. On pense bien sûr à Vista, mais également aux autres principales distributions Linux.
Edit : on me fait remarquer que ce billet est publié le jour des Poissons. Je précise donc que le mail de Mark, lui, date de la veille...

Un grand merci à jd (rédacteur du billet) et olive pour avoir maintenu le doute dans l'esprit de certains forumeurs et tchateurs ! (au passage, désolé AlexandreP ;-) ).
Et j'en profite pour annoncer la future contribution probable (bon ok je prend des pincettes car cette décision ne m'appartient plus) de jd dans la catégorie Ubuntu. De vraies nouvelles sur Dapper ne devraient pas tarder.
