  75. <p>This CSS is now part of most websites I make:</p>
  76. <pre><code class="language-css">:root {
  77. font-size: calc(1rem + 0.25vw);
  78. }
  79. </code></pre>
  80. <p>This rule is an alternative to <code>@media</code> rules like this from nytimes.com:</p>
  81. <pre><code class="language-css">p { font-size: 1.125rem; }
  82. @media (min-width: 740px) {
  83. p { font-size: 1.25rem; }
  84. }
  85. </code></pre>
  86. <p>This pattern is the norm:
  87. a small font size, a large font size, and a breakpoint.
  88. Here’s a sample of common sites:</p>
  89. <table>
  90. <thead>
  91. <tr>
  92. <th></th>
  93. <th>Small font-size</th>
  94. <th>Large font-size</th>
  95. <th>Breakpoint</th>
  96. </tr>
  97. </thead>
  98. <tbody>
  99. <tr>
  100. <td><strong>Medium.com</strong></td>
  101. <td><code>1.125rem</code></td>
  102. <td><code>1.25rem</code></td>
  103. <td><code>728px</code></td>
  104. </tr>
  105. <tr>
  106. <td><strong>Substack.com</strong></td>
  107. <td><code>1.125rem</code></td>
  108. <td><code>1.25rem</code></td>
  109. <td><code>768px</code></td>
  110. </tr>
  111. <tr>
  112. <td><strong>Nytimes.com</strong></td>
  113. <td><code>1.125rem</code></td>
  114. <td><code>1.25rem</code></td>
  115. <td><code>740px</code></td>
  116. </tr>
  117. </tbody>
  118. </table>
  119. <p>But breakpoints are mathematically ugly!
  120. Instead of defining <code>font-size</code> piecewise,
  121. can’t we use one linear function?
  122. Here’s the line I believe they’re trying to approximate:</p>
  123. <p><img src="/assets/2024-03-12/chart.png"></p>
  124. <p>With modern CSS, we can just write that function!
  125. It’s <code>calc(1.0625rem + 0.2604vw)</code>.
  126. I round this to <code>1rem + 0.25vw</code>.</p>
  127. <p>Sharp-eyed readers might wonder:
  128. doesn’t my CSS have circular reasoning?
  129. If <code>rem</code> is defined as “Font size of the root element”,
  130. how can we use <code>1rem</code> in the definition of <code>font-size</code> on the root element?!
  131. It turns out <a href="https://www.w3.org/TR/css-values-3/#rem">it’s a special case</a>:</p>
  132. <blockquote>
  133. <p>When specified in the <code>font-size</code> property of the root element,
  134. or in a document with no root element,
  135. <code>1rem</code> is equal to the initial value of the <code>font-size</code> property.</p>
  136. </blockquote>
